A lot can change in 50 years. With The Balvenie Fifty collection, it’s the flavour and quality.
The first edition, a single cask expression from 1973, was aged in Cask 8720—a European oak refill butt—before being released in 2024.
The second, a marriage of Cask 8720 and an American oak hogshead, was introduced recently. Bottled at 49.8 percent ABV, it is available in only 97 bottles worldwide, making it one of The Balvenie’s most limited and exceptional releases.
This year marks the debut of the third edition, which incorporates a third cask—a 1974 American oak barrel—into the blend.
Combined, all three editions create a harmonious profile featuring molten dates, soft currants, citrus zest, and a buttery finish, says Global Brand Ambassador Charlie Metcalfe. He sees The Balvenie Fifty collection as an expression of what makes us unique.
“Every cask tells a human story of resilience, innovation, and the passing on of knowledge. It symbolises our unwavering commitment to preserving traditional crafts while embracing the future and is a reminder that true craftsmanship takes time. We create not only for today, but for the next generation,” he explains.
This collection was able to come to life as a result of the “watchful stewardship” of a team, Metcalfe says. Among them are David Stewart, the former malt master, and Kelsey McKechnie, his successor.
In the Rare Marriages series, the duo blended remarkable casks over extended periods to unlock balance and depth. It laid the foundation for the Fifty collection.
More can be expected from the brand, Metcalfe adds. “The Balvenie will continue to push boundaries while honouring our heritage, and we can’t wait to share the next evolution of our story.”
