Our skin ages faster than we realise. After we turn 20, our skin density decreases by one percent every year. A naturally occurring human protein known as epidermal growth factor (EGF), which boosts collagen and elastin production to keep the skin supple and radiant, also starts to dwindle.
But three Icelandic scientists found a way to bioengineer a plant-based replica of EGF in the barley plant, and in 2010 used the technology to launch anti-ageing skincare line Bioeffect. In line with the brand’s commitment to the preservation of chemical purity, the hero product EGF Serum contains just seven ingredients. The serum increases skin density with consistent application and over 40 in-house scientific studies and various independent clinical trials support this finding.
Bioeffect is just getting started. The company has released four products in the last three years, including the award-winning EGF Power Serum. “While EGF Serum prevents visible signs of ageing, EGF Power Serum is ideal for those who are already noticing signs of ageing in their skin. These include fine lines, wrinkles, loss of density, and uneven skin tone,” explains CEO Liv Bergþórsdóttir.
The water used to grow the barley is also used in the formulation of all products, which ensures that the solution is both enriched with nutrients and geologically filtered through layers of inert volcanic lava. Moreover, all growth factors are produced in the brand’s hydroponic, ecologically engineered greenhouse.
“This is why we say that all Bioeffect products are pure, green, and clean—and truly effective,” says Bergþórsdóttir.
