One of the most ambitious additions to the motif to date is this year’s pink enamel, beautifully luminous and flecked with microscopic bubbles. Its origins trace back to a simple belief. Co-founder Estelle Arpels’ nephew, Jacques Arpels, used to say, “To be lucky, you have to believe in luck.”
That sentiment became a guiding philosophy for the maison, whose archives featured four-leaf clovers long before they inspired the first Alhambra long necklace. Introduced in 1968 with 20 textured yellow-gold motifs, the design transformed from a timeless emblem of good fortune into an elegant, effortlessly wearable piece. Its clean lines and fluid silhouette captured the spirit of the era, laying the foundation for one of modern jewellery’s most enduring symbols.
The collection, however, has evolved more through materials than through form. The stones the clover has featured include onyx, carnelian, mother-of-pearl, malachite, turquoise, guilloche gold, and even Sevres porcelain, each version offering a fresh facet while preserving the original silhouette. Now, enamel takes centre stage. As one of jewellery’s oldest and most demanding decorative arts, it has long been part of Van Cleef & Arpels’ creative vocabulary.
This pink enamel took years to develop. Inspired by the “gold-ruby” process, a 17th-century glassmaking method that produces rich, transparent red glass by adding metallic gold to molten glass, the colour emerges from microscopic gold particles suspended in the enamel. Achieving the perfect hue required exceptional precision: the particles’ size, shape, and concentration were calibrated through extensive research in the maison’s enamel workshops.
This painstaking process results in enamel with remarkable depth and brilliance. When paired with yellow gold or guilloche yellow gold, it captures and diffuses light, giving each clover an almost luminous glow. Beyond colour, the translucent material reflects light with exceptional brilliance—slightly more than an emerald, according to the maison. Coupled with the gently curved surface of each motif, a subtle, dynamic interplay of light shifts as the jewellery moves with the wearer.
The five new Vintage Alhambra and Magic Alhambra pieces—a 20-clover long necklace, a 10-clover necklace, a single-clover pendant, a five-clover bracelet, and two-clover earrings—showcase the maison’s exceptional craftsmanship. That level of craftsmanship depends on skills few workshops still keep. Within its workshops, the maison’s artisans use more than 15 enamelling techniques, from miniature painting and grisaille to the delicate plique-a-jour method.
Alongside preserving traditional crafts, Van Cleef & Arpels’ Metiers d’Art division also refines existing methods and invents new ones, such as faconne enamel. This skill creates a 3D shape with remarkable volume and transparency, as seen on the Lady Arpels Jour Enchante watch and the Perlee Extraordinaire Fruits Enchantes pieces.
The same meticulous attention to detail governs enamel setting. Every motif sits within the Alhambra’s signature double row of beaded gold, each bead carefully curved by hand to a uniform contour that frames the clover and enhances the enamel’s brilliance. Discreet claws fold down at the back and are rounded to sit gently against skin or fabric, while the chain linking each motif is faceted for extra lustre. Each finished piece undergoes a magnified inspection before leaving the workshop.
