Leave it to Prada to combine typically precious wedding dresses with everyday clothing—and in a way that somehow makes perfect sense. It was but only one example of how the Prada autumn/winter 2023 womenswear collection continued the brand’s exploration of beauty and uniformity but interpreted in juxtaposing ways that oddly make for stylish statements.
The setting of the show echoed that of its menswear counterpart. The ceiling rose to reveal floral arrangements adorned on pillars, resembling indoor wedding decor. Referred to as ‘Taking Care’, the collection took cues from notions of care and reimagined them to imbue design elements with a new purpose.
The opening looks consisted of the aforementioned wedding dress elements. As though spliced into two, embellished white skirts (perceived symbols of love) were paired with jumpers, at once elevating the mundane uniformity of the jumpers and normalising the typical occasionwear piece.
While it may be farfetched to think—or not, given the rising trend of refashioning existing pieces into something completely new—former brides the world over would be thinking of doing the same to their well-kept wedding gowns, this idea of rethinking the value of a garment is one that perhaps could do with a bit of a reworking from time to time.
Value is subjective after all, especially when it comes to something as personal as fashion. And what we place utmost care and importance to, varies person to person. This underlying notion was also reflected in the collection’s use of utilitarian pieces—parkas and coats elongated to be made into dresses.
Padded pillow-like pieces—a reinterpretation of one of Prada’s autumn/winter 2023 menswear explorations—exude care for the body as they seemingly envelope and protect. The same treatment was applied to tailoring that were cut voluminous as though gently cocooning the body.
The collection was rounded off with a number of dresses cut from printed florals—another gesture of care typically used in fashion.
There’s an overall simplicity to the Prada autumn/winter 2023 womenswear collection. But as with every other collection by the brand, and especially by co-creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, there’s an intellectual sense that not many fashion brands and houses care for. And that, is what makes Prada a leader among peers.
