The culmination of the award season for the best in film, the 95th Academy Awards started off with quite a first-time surprise. What would typically be a red carpet for nominees, presenters and guests was turned into a neutral colour—the official word is “champagne” but it’s pretty much beige—for the first time in the award show’s history.

And while, the change may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it did little to dampen the fashion that made impact on it.

The evening was surprisingly filled with plenty of whites. Newly crowned Academy Award winner (the first Asian actress to ever win the ‘Best Actress’ category at the Oscars) Michelle Yeoh took to the event and her win in a feathered Dior haute couture creation. Mindy Kaling stunned in a Vera Wang number, while Emily Blunt kept things simple, minimal and chic in an all-white Valentino dress. Even the men were in on it too with Brian Tyree Henry and Paul Mescal opting for white tuxedoes.

And speaking of the men, black tuxedoes were aplenty but none were ever that simple. Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (an Academy Award-nominee for co-writing ‘Lift Me Up’ for Wakanda Forever) went floral with a custom Bode piece, while Reece Feldman’s Dickson Lim suit was a playful play at deconstruction while still remaining elegant and event-appropriate.
