It has been 30 years since the release of Sex — an ahead-of-its-time provocative book by Madonna. Featuring black-and-white images shot by photographer Steven Meisel (in his inimitable sensual stylings) and text written by the entertainer herself, Sex was initially released after Madonna’s fifth studio album Erotica in 1992.
There’s no doubt that the book caused a stir back in the day. Not only were the images sexually charged, Sex was seen as a promotion of liberated views of sexual self-expression.
In celebration of Sex‘s cultural impact and 30th-anniversary, Saint Laurent Rive Droite has spearheaded a re-edition of the book, published by Callaway. Only a limited-edition run of 800 copies have been printed.
A special exhibition curated by Madonna and Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello is also being held as part of Art Basel Miami Beach 2022. Select images from Sex will be presented in large formats. These will be housed within a temporary beachfront box constructed specially for the exhibition and open to the public throughout the duration of Art Basel Miami Beach 2022.
But far from it being just an exhibition, merchandise including T-shirts and tote bags will also be up for sale at the space. In addition to that, a number of the 800 limited-edition run have been signed by Madonna herself — these will be up for auction at a later date with proceeds benefitting Raising Malawi, Madonna’s own charity that has been aiding vulnerable children of Malawi.
The Saint Laurent Rive Droite Sex by Madonna exhibition will run from 29 November to 4 December 2022 at Art Basel Miami Beach 2022. Admission is free and open only to those over the age of 18.
