It’s not often that collections by luxury fashion houses look and feel, well, luxurious. Exuding luxury has little to do with exaggerated forms or painstakingly embellishing everything; sometimes it’s simplicity and the deft know-how of construction, cut and materiality that captures the idea of luxury.
At Bottega Veneta, creative director Matthieu Blazy understands this completely.
The autumn/winter 2023 collection was the final part of a trilogy that Blazy conceptualised and refers to as ‘Italia’—a celebration of the country’s past, present and future through craft that he’s championed from his very first debut for the house. As a whole, the collection was decadent and replete with strong sculpting of rich fabrications and leathers as well as incorporating brilliant textures.
If the idea of Blazy’s trompe l’œil play with leather still tickles your fancy, the idea is expanded further for autumn/winter 2023. The opening look consisted of a transparent white chemise that was paired simple with socks that were actually crafted from knitted leather, giving sufficient support to function as footwear. Look 4’s grey flannel pyjamas looked convincing too (no surprise there) but once again fashioned from nappa leather. In fact, I’m certain there were a lot of this at play throughout the collection.
This exceptional display and understanding of materiality was apparent in every look. Crocodile leather teamed up with a sliver of ostrich in the form of a tie in look 9, look 25’s full leather outfit was constructed with boning as a nod to historical silhouettes, and knit scales met graphic feathers in such beautiful contrasts. There was a lot to see yet, nothing felt out of place.
Bottega Veneta’s iconic Intrecciato motif were also seamlessly incorporated. They were, of course, rendered in different variations for the collection’s bags. But also acted like second skin in the form of knee-high boots and gloves paired with accessories in the same shade of leather.
The recently released Andiamo bag may be the house’s current It bag, yet the autumn/winter 2023’s version of the Sardine could be next on the list. This time, the handle is crafted from Murano glass giving it a more translucent touch that amplifies the versatility of the bag.
