Sharad Lal’s journey into purpose-driven leadership began with a personal tragedy that shattered his entire way of thinking. “Until then, I had been exclusively focused on achievement, financial success, and external validation. But suddenly, despite everything I’d achieved, I was alone and deeply unhappy. It was the first time I questioned what truly mattered.”

In search of answers, Lal turned to psychology to process his emotions and make sense of his experiences. Philosophy followed, and he gradually realised that the answers to meaning and purpose are not found outside of us but within.

“Our constant pursuit of external success is reinforced by societal applause, pushing us to repeat the cycle. But true clarity comes when we quiet the noise and turn inwards.”

Eventually, he realised he was not alone in facing existentialist questions. Although midlife reflection is universal, society does not provide a clear framework.

After selling his last business, the serial entrepreneur formed The How To Live Company in 2018. It holds programmes for leaders seeking “performance through purpose” by partnering with professional coaches. Lal emphasises self-awareness as a means of promoting intentionality, growth, meaning, and success.

Through his How To Live podcast, now among the top three globally, he engages in insightful conversations with leaders about managing stress, deepening relationships, navigating midlife, and making a difference in the world.

Lal describes himself as a student of life. “I want to learn as much as possible and share that knowledge with others. The journey is not about achieving one final answer—it is about continually evolving, understanding ourselves, and helping others do the same.”
