Founded by former radio DJ Maddy Barber, Madly is a Singapore-based fine jewellery brand specialising in coloured gems. It stemmed from her desire to make pieces that celebrate the personality and journey of those who wear them, this bespoke go-to celebrated its 10th anniversary in November.
Festivities include a limited-edition coffee table tome showcasing Madly’s iconic creations and a special cake made by Ten Butter Fingers. The brand also partnered with BMW Eurokars Auto on a video series that singles out dynamic women who love Madly creations.
As we enter the last month of 2024, Barber looks back on the leadership lessons she’s picked up and considers the challenges she faces in the year ahead.
“Ambition and vision are great traits for entrepreneurship, but resilience is a non-negotiable. Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster of setbacks, and if you can’t get back up, it’s game over.

“Self-awareness is crucial in this regard. Knowing what you bring to the table while recognising where you need support is the foundation for building a high-performing team, where everyone knows her role and does her best.
“My leadership style has always been centred on brutal honesty and transparency. I don’t like fluff. People need to know where they stand and what they’re expected to do.

“I have never set out to be anyone’s mentor—patience isn’t exactly one of my strong suits! Instead, I strive to understand every person’s strengths and weaknesses, and then focus on those strengths to empower, encourage, and build confidence.
“I know I’m not the only person who tries to explain the difference between being mean and providing honest feedback to younger team members. Positive affirmation alone won’t lead to growth. It’s a tough one to balance, and I’m still working that out.”
