Hot on the heels of the success of Grand Seiko’s SLGB003—the first model to debut the U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) Spring Drive calibre 9RB2—comes the limited-edition SLGB005, another state-of-the-art ticker that combines the watchmaker’s quest for performance with its evocative nature-inspired aesthetic.

The SLGB005 features a 37-mm Evolution 9 case made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, a high-resistance alloy renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance. The material’s brighter hue enhances Grand Seiko’s alternating Zaratsu mirror finishes and brushed surfaces, but its main advantage is durability; combining a highly stable calibre with a case built to resist pitting and corrosion is a technical choice, not just an aesthetic one.

Consistent with Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 aesthetic, the ergonomics are equally practical, featuring a low centre of gravity, broad grooved indices, and sharply faceted hands for easy readability. Additionally, the bracelet’s width exceeds half the case diameter, ensuring a balanced and comfortable fit on the wrist.

The dial boasts a violet gradient that lightens towards the centre to reveal a fine crystalline texture, a nod to the frosted trees at daybreak over the Kirigamine Highlands near the
Shinshu Watch Studio. Against it, the Spring Drive seconds hand makes its uninterrupted sweep—an instant tell of the glide system at work.

Driving the watch is the calibre 9RB2. The Spring Drive movement is rated to an annual deviation of ±20 seconds—remarkable for a wristwatch powered by a conventional mainspring. To achieve this, Grand Seiko tightens control over its reference system rather than changing its architecture.

Each quartz oscillator is aged for three months, then individually profiled at multiple temperatures. In use, the data are stored on a newly designed low-power integrated circuit that applies fine thermo-compensation.

The oscillator and its sensor are vacuum-sealed to reduce thermal fluctuations and shield the assembly from humidity, static, and stray light. Over time, if drift appears, a regulation switch allows an authorised technician to trim the rate without disturbing the sealed module.

Limited to 1,300 pieces.
