The Glenrothes 42 Year Old

No one understands turbulence like The Glenrothes. The Speyside distillery suffered three fires and an explosion between 1897 and 1962, and changed hands several times in its history. Malts made for Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse marked its early years until wine retailers Berry Bros & Rudd bought it. Then it began offering vintage bottling releases. When it was finally re-purchased by Edrington (famous owners of The Macallan and Highland Park) in 2017, age statement expressions replaced the vintages. The Glenrothes has spent decades struggling with an identity crisis.

But not anymore. As a follow-up to the 50 Year Old from 2020 and the 36 Year Old released last year, “The 42” continues to show whisky drinkers the capabilities of its distillery when given enough time and focus.

The 42 Year Old is the second-oldest expression from The Glenrothes, after the 50 Year Old.

Spirits from four sherry-seasoned casks selected by Master Whisky Maker Laura Rampling went into The 42, giving it that dark, amber hue—untouched by caramel colouring—that typifies whiskies of significant age. The aroma is a heady blend of ripe apricots, sugared almonds, orange peel, and coriander seed. On the palate, The 42 delivers creamy indulgence through notes of vanilla and honeycomb, complemented by a whisper of orange oil. The finish is long and aromatic, making every sip a satisfying journey that delights the senses.

“This 42-year-old whisky epitomises the character of The Glenrothes distillery,” said Rampling in a statement. “These four casks have taken our spirit on a journey of maturation over over four decades, refining the original delicate and fruity character of our new make spirit without overpowering it. Part science, part alchemy and a bit of magic, the result is a beautifully elegant whisky that truly allows the bright and vibrant character of The Glenrothes to sing.”

Bottled at a drinkable 43 per cent ABV, The 42 is housed in vibrant packaging inspired by the terrain surrounding The Glenrothes Estate. It’ll be available in May at The Oaks Cellars and 1855 The Bottle Shop.
