Fabian Forni has been building a bridge for the past four years. Formerly Counsellor for Culture at the Embassy of France in Thailand, he developed a deep appreciation for Asia that led him to Singapore. Though he had never lived here, he became captivated by the island-state’s allure after three memorable visits.
While on these trips, he decided: what better way to discover a country’s culture than to explore its museums? Museums such as the Asian Civilisations Museum and the National Gallery Singapore left an indelible impression on him. As Forni continued onwards, he discovered Singapore’s commitment to preserving its green environment and its vibrant culinary scene added to its appeal.
Now, as executive director of Alliance Française de Singapour, which also serves as a French community hub, Forni spearheads a variety of programmes and exhibitions meant to showcase France’s uniqueness and facilitate interaction between cultures.
“The Alliance Française family, which counts thousands of French language and culture enthusiasts, welcomes not only the French community, but also individuals from local communities, creating a space for cultural exchange.”

Among other exhibitions that highlight the cultural connections between France and Singapore are A Table, which showcased state dinner menus between French and Singaporean heads of state, and Influencers, which explored French modern art’s influence on local artists.
Currently running until mid-July is Move! Around The World, which is part of the French Excellence programme. Inspired by Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of French transportation. From the experiences of space travel with Thomas Pesquet, an astronaut for the French European Space Agency, to examining different eras of transportation, it offers a unique opportunity for visitors to transcend time and space.
As he explains, Forni’s lifelong curiosity has always driven his work, from diversity to historical depths. Across seas and borders, there’s something ambassadorial about his quest in sharing French culture with the rest of the world.
During his time in Dijon, the capital of the Burgundy region in France, he fondly recalls strolling through vineyards. It became especially charming when it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list; an accolade that adds an additional layer of value.
The French culture often manifests itself in unexpected places. “Many things in our daily lives bear the French touch,” Forni says, including some we are unaware of. This was the main theme of one of Forni’s latest exhibitions, ICONIC!, which presents approximately 50 commonplace items. Among those that originated in France are smiley icons, lipstick, photography, cinematography, and denim. “And let’s not forget Daft Punk,” Forni adds. “They conquered the whole world from behind their helmets.”
When asked what is the best way to immerse in French culture, Forni recommends a trek through the French countryside. Visitors can observe architectural marvels, explore extraordinary museums, and sample amazing regional cuisine. It’s the kind of ‘link’ that makes the world smaller; it’s possible to cross over.
