From the Celine winter 2022 womenswear runway in two historic locales — the Hôtel de la Marine and the Hôtel National des Invalides — to the streets of Paris, Blackpink’s Lisa has been deftly showcasing the Celine Matelassé Monochrome’s versatility. She’s joined by fellow runway model Kaia Gerber, who was photographed with the bag in Los Angeles wearing a flirty, floral minidress.
Essentially a quilted goatskin bag, the Matelassé Monochrome is the latest addition to creative, artistic and image director Hedi Slimane’s growing list of Celine bag staples. Arguably his most versatile piece yet, it isn’t dictated by any prevailing trends.
Featuring a classic rectangular shape and smooth edges, it fits comfortably close to the body. Hardware is slightly oversized, with a long chain strap for wearing the Matelassé Monochrome across the body or on the shoulder. In gold lettering, the Celine logo is front and centre.
Its timeless appeal comes from the all-over quilting of the goatskin. The quilted bags of traditional design are typically finely detailed, but Slimane’s version is thoroughly modern.
The graphic quilting occupies a large portion of the bag, including a segment that displays the Celine branding. Its oversized proportions match the chain and give the bag an air of bold youthfulness — you wouldn’t miss the quilting from afar.
Poised to be reimagined in future collections, the Matelassé Monochrome makes its debut with two variations. Even though the black is preferred by the aforementioned celebrities, the nude version beautifully complements the fitted gold hardware.
