The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) was the spectacle that it’s always known to be. Held in New Jersey, this year’s VMAs featured a host of historic moments, including K-pop girl group Blackpink’s first-ever US award show performance, Lisa of Blackpink becoming the first female to nab the ‘Best K-pop’ award, Taylor Swift being the first artist ever to win three ‘Video of the Year’ awards, and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Best Hip Hop’ win making her the most awarded in the category.
As with most award shows — especially those that have anything to do with music — the red carpet fashion was quite a sight. And we’re not just talking about the ladies; the men pulled out all the stops too.
Lil Nas X turned up in a characteristically Harris Reed look, complete with a halo-like headgear, while ‘Push Performance of The Year’ nominee Omar Apollo kept things simple but chic in an all-black Valentino fit. J Balvin and Offset both chose white Louis Vuitton suits, and Jack Harlow switched things up in a leather Hermès suit.
But perhaps, none was as extravagantly dramatic as Lizzo. The American artiste took to the red carpet in a voluptuous, navy spring/summer 2022 couture gown by Jean Paul Gaultier that was guest-designed by Glenn Martens. Lizzo played up the colour of the gown with matching gloves and lip colour. The amount of fabric used for the gown — what can only be considered beautifully excessive — even prompted Lizzo to joke about it.
