Hendry Poh’s love for photography runs more than a decade old. From documenting secondary school graduations to collaborating with fellow creatives and exhibiting his prints, he has honed his craft. He shares them on his Instagram account (@hendry.poh).

Cameras came into play quickly and naturally. Poh began collecting film cameras in 2009, smitten by their nostalgic appeal. Later, he added accessories, such as Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, and Leica lenses, as well as a variety of large-format cameras (from half-frame to 4 x 5).

Despite splashing nearly $35,000 on his hobby, he tells us he hasn’t dared count the number of cameras he possesses. His missus, however, cheerfully responds: “Around 300!”

What are some of your favourites from your collection?

I bought this Rolleicord V (Model K3C) in 2015 while in Australia with my family. Having just started my career, I hesitated to make such a large purchase. However, I couldn’t resist buying it on our last day in Sydney. It is more than just a camera; it brings me joy in pursuing my passion. Another favourite is the Nikon Df. I cherish that for its sentimental value because my father-in-law gave it to me.

Why film cameras?

As I began to enjoy more disposable income, film cameras were being discarded or bought at a bargain because people no longer wanted them. However, it was not just about accessibility. I felt compelled to rescue film cameras when I saw them being discarded. This habit extended to the digicams of the 2000s [laughs].

How do you decide which camera to rescue?

Often, I stumble upon a camera at a flea market and decide I must rescue it. Various styles and techniques require different cameras and lenses. A Ricoh is great for hip shots and zone focusing, whereas an Olympus half-frame is compact and ideal for casual outings.

What are your plans for this collection?

It is my goal to streamline my collection in the next five years. I believe I have completed my Nikon gear, especially after acquiring the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 Noct Nikkor lens. Now that I’m ready to explore other systems, my top choice is the Olympus 4/3. It has so much potential.

Is there anything else on your to-do list?

I want to dedicate more time to publishing and printing my works. Photography’s final step—creating physical prints—has eluded me. So, I’m excited to share my work in a more tangible way.
