Carl Cox needs no introduction. The legend of techno helmed the decks of Space Ibiza for over 15 years and was a key figure in propelling the now-defunct club to its hallowed status. In the past decade since the club’s closure, Cox has been busy with other projects, including one with Zenith.
He shares his favourite places to perform and how his collaboration with Zenith started during our short time together.
You’ve been performing for a long time. Where do you like to perform the most?
That is a difficult question. Every place has a different story—from the small underground club to a festival mainstage. But I would say that I’ve been lucky to play at some iconic places, including Central Park New York, Stonehenge, and The Great Pyramids in Egypt.
How did the relationship and conversation with Zenith start?
It started over a dinner. I didn’t know much about it before meeting the brand, aside from the El Primero, of course! Zenith is the kind of watch manufacture you need to discover. Then, once you discover its rich history and what goes on behind it, you can’t believe you didn’t know about it sooner.
The relationship developed quickly because we had shared ideas. It was good to develop this further during the lockdown and launch exciting timepieces together, like this Zenith Defy Extreme Carl Cox Limited Edition (pictured).
You must have had some crazy stories on tour.
So many, but I would say that my nine-hour set in 2016 at the closing party of my long-term residency at Space (a now-closed super-club in Ibiza that’s topped multiple lists) was something special. I knew it would be my last one and it was amazing to leave that venue on such a high.
Have you achieved any dreams you had? What’s next?
I never dreamed my music would take me to the places it has and that, years later, I’d be playing to bigger and bigger audiences. Making these special timepieces with Zenith is great as well. I am proud of what we have accomplished.
