White Birch is the name for Grand Seiko watches with a particular dial: a white, vertically textured surface designed to resemble the bark of white birch trees. The trees grow in the forests of Shinshu, in Nagano Prefecture, where Grand Seiko makes its Spring Drive watches. The design has become one of the manufacture’s contemporary signatures, with each interpretation bringing a different character. In the SLGB009, a finer sunray finish creates a brighter, more refined expression, complemented by Ever-Brilliant Steel and Grand Seiko’s most accurate Spring Drive movement to date, calibre 9RB2.

Japan’s natural landscape is central to Grand Seiko’s design. The brand often draws on its immediate surroundings, such as snow, water, trees, changing light and the seasons. These references shape the texture, colour and finish of its dials, and how a watch reflects light on the wrist. The White Birch comes from that tradition, translating what the designers see in the forest into the dial’s material and surface.

For the SLGB009, Grand Seiko adds a finer sunray finish to the familiar vertical texture. Light travels across the surface with greater clarity, evoking sunlight filtering through pale trunks. A tempered-blue seconds hand glides around the dial in the uninterrupted sweep that has become a visual hallmark of Spring Drive.

The SLGB009 belongs to the Evolution 9 Collection, an evolution of the Grand Seiko Style established in 1967. Its design prioritises legibility, comfort and the interplay of light and shadow. Bold hands, faceted hour markers and broad surfaces give the watch definition, while its proportions allow the case to sit low on the wrist.

Ever-Brilliant Steel is a stainless steel alloy used by Grand Seiko. It is whiter than the steel used in most watches and more corrosion-resistant. On the SLGB009, both the case and bracelet are made from it.Photo: Grand Seiko.

The case measures 40mm in diameter, 11.7mm thick and 47.2mm from lug to lug. Both the case and bracelet are made from Ever-Brilliant Steel, an alloy with a whiter, cleaner appearance and greater corrosion resistance than conventional stainless steel. Its cool sheen complements the White Birch dial’s luminosity.

The bracelet features a new three-step micro-adjustment clasp, offering 6mm of tool-free adjustment in 2mm increments. That flexibility is particularly useful in Singapore’s climate, where wrist size can vary over the course of a day. A screw-down crown and 10-bar water resistance further support everyday wear.

The technical headline is calibre 9RB2, designated Spring Drive U.F.A. for Ultra Fine Accuracy. Grand Seiko rates it to ±20 seconds per year, or about ±3 seconds per month. At that level, the usual measure of seconds gained or lost per day becomes almost irrelevant; accuracy is better considered across the year.

Like a mechanical watch, a Spring Drive movement runs entirely on a mainspring and needs no external electrical source. The difference is in its regulation: a quartz oscillator and electromagnetic brake replace the traditional balance wheel and escapement to control the release of stored energy. Calibre 9RB2 refines this system further. Each quartz oscillator is aged for three months, tested across a range of temperatures and paired with movement-specific compensation data programmed into the integrated circuit (IC). The oscillator and temperature sensor are also vacuum-sealed together, keeping them at the same temperature and shielding them from humidity, static electricity, and light.

The calibre also introduces a Spring Drive first: a regulation switch that allows a watchmaker to correct long-term deviation during servicing. Its approximately 72-hour power reserve is sufficient for the watch to be set aside over a weekend and still be running on Monday.

Together, these elements define the SLGB009’s appeal: a dial rooted in landscape and light, an Evolution 9 case and bracelet designed for comfort and practicality, and the 9RB2 calibre providing technical authority.

Priced at S$12,500, the SLGB009 brings together several of Grand Seiko’s defining strengths: reverence for nature, close attention to wearability and an exceptional pursuit of precision. The White Birch may now be familiar territory for the manufacture, but this version shows how much remains to be explored.
