With the changing seasons comes new beginnings. Manhattan’s latest ‘Seasons of Manhattan’ menu introduces 31 new cocktails, all of which fall under the categories of spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
My personal favourite: Where the Boys Are, a tipple comprising tequila, mezcal, citrus, plum, and blackberry. It goes down dangerously well—nothing overly piquant so it’s both easy to come back to and move on from. Interesting, it was crafted as a representation of Beer Pong; the crimson hue is meant to be reminiscent of a red Solo cup, and the round melon candy, of a ping pong ball.
A strong contender for the top spot, though, is Minutes to Midnight. Made with Lillet Blanc, bergamot liqueur, champagne, and grape, it’s nicely tangy for someone who isn’t a fan of bubbly. It’s also served in a bottle, and controlling my own pour tends to make me conscious of my consumption. Which is very much a good thing.
Other highlights include It’s Gettin’ Hot in Here, concocted with butter-washed genever and spiced honey infused with basil, sage, thyme, and chilli; and Tatami Shot, an Espresso Martini-inspired drink made with Japanese single malt whisky, baijiu, spiced pear, pimento, lemon-mushroom oleo, and creamy espresso foam.
Then there are the food pairings, like the Smoked Soy Egg served devilled-style with whipped avocado and soy- cured trout roe; and Hamachi Tartare tossed in tom yum and served on tostones.
If you’re only going to have one dish, make it the Lobster Taco wrapped in crisp wonton. It’s something you’ll dreading to share, so make sure there’s enough to go around.
