Divorce can be a difficult experience, but it can also be a catalyst for growth. By taking responsibility for her role in her relationship’s end, Laila White, 57, learnt to let go of any resentment. This newfound sense of peace led her to welcome Maxine Devereaux, her ex-husband’s new wife, into her life. Together, they’ve built a women’s empowerment club called GalUp.

Short for “girl up” and “always forwardmoving”, White explains that GalUp was born out of a unique journey shared by two women who married the same man at different points in their lives. “We are not a club for women to bash their spouses, exes, or partners. Instead, we are strong supporters of people in healthy relationships and solution finders for those who aren’t but are willing to change,” she says.

In August, GalUp will launch a membership programme for women of all backgrounds seeking personal growth through curated events. White adds that they are targeting C-suite executives with the financial resources to pay it forward to women who cannot afford the fees. “They can support GalUp in various ways: donate memberships, sponsor event tickets, or lend clothing and accessories for GalUP events. Corporate sponsorships are also welcome for fundraising events.”

There will be three events to help women from all walks of life connect, grow, and achieve their goals. “GalUp’s signature dinners celebrate you. Be present, connect with like-minded women, and focus on yourself. The 360 Forums are interactive, providing information and tools from professionals for everyday life and the future. Lastly, TIFI (Trash It or **** It) is a hybrid platform for meet-ups that allow women to vent and not feel alone or judged.”

It is White’s wish that members will find strength and resilience, even in matters of the heart, without losing hope or becoming jaded. She and her team serve as “soul weavers”, bringing together diverse wisdom, experience, and support to facilitate a cohesive healing journey.

“We will connect you with the right professionals who can help you with your predicament. Our main role is to listen, provide a safe, confidential space when you need support, and share our personal experiences so you won’t feel alone or silly.”

Through her solitary healing journey, White found her blessing: letting go of her ego and anger, and listening to Devereaux, who had a lot to say. Unlike most people who think it strange, her ex finds White and Deveraux’s relationship beautiful and wish the both of them well. “This type of bond can only work if both parties have clear intentions and stable, confident cores, not just as current or former spouses,” White says.

Two women, one unique friendship and a shared commitment to raising amazing kids. That’s a book. Devereaux has stayed married to White’s ex-husband for 20 years. But White has never been bitter about it. For her, the greatest love she has ever experienced resides within herself.

“I consider everyone in my life an added blessing from a higher power. I am love. Nothing and no one can take that away from me, ever.”
